I'm agreeing with Sue Moroney - the apocalypse is at hand.

Damnit she's right. The lowered limit is a joke and consistent with a traffic police mindset of prioritising ticketing over road safety.

How many times do we see a booze bus setup with a dozen cops and cars at midday. It's most unlikely to catch a drink driver. However you can see them all going over each car stopped checking WOF, rego and RUC tickets with a magnifying glass. A massive
drain on resources for zero safety benefit.

And the marginal alcohol limit, as shown to be unrelated to crashes, is just the icing on the cake for these ticket monkeys.

Same goes for mobile speed cameras. Always setup around a country passing lane.
    Revenue over safety once again.

And every driver is spending more time watching the speedo than the road. >Strange though how the police can race around at speeds well over the
speed limit to catch those evil motorists who dare to be 5km over the
    posted limit.

That sounds very surprising, george - do you have a cite for that
    story?

And the apologists we get on the news after a public holiday, low road
toll, it's all their doing, high road toll, we're to blame
I haven't heard that one either - cite?

I'm not saying you are wrong, its just that they don't fit with my
memories of discussion and news reports over road chases or road toll.

    Although from that article:
"A police headquarters spokeswoman there were "promising signs" the
law change might be influencing drivers' behaviour because, since
October 2015, almost 2500 fewer drivers had been caught over the old
    limit."

I suspect there has been a change in behaviour regarding drinking and
driving - also affected by people less able to afford the cost of
    going out.

One death in a year is not too far out of line with a forecast 3
    deaths.

    Of more concernmay be:
"But Moroney said figures provided to her by Associate Transport
Minister Craig Foss showed the Government was diverting police
resources to target good drivers for fine revenue."

None of the money from fines and infringments goes to the police
budget, but there may be less formal links. It would be interesting to
see the figures Moroney was provided with.
