I suspect it was, with hindsight, poor jugement to ask for personal
information thrugh nz.general, but I can't remembert he reason given
at the time. It is certainly poor judgement for someone to dredge it
    up all this time later.

You and canfan are both replying to the original message from 2001.
Not to a recently reposted copy.

The original message is still on Google Groups. You see it at the
top of nz.general only because, Google Groups moves a thread back up
to the top when someone replies in that thread.

Go to a post office, AMI etc (any LTSA agent), fill in a form with that reg, pay them a couple of dollars ($2.50 I think) and they'll print you the name and address of the person it's registered to.

No they will not. It costs $15 or so, you have to give a reason for wanting the
info and they may refuse to give it and there is no money back guarantee. Seems
insurance companies etc can get the info but this would be subject to privacy covenants. If
you are doing a Disputes Tribunal action you may be able to get it or the Tribunal will forward things on. If you got the info via a mate in an insurance
company he or she would be in serious trouble if caught.
The whole idea is to stop people getting such names and addresses then using it
to harass the owner (who may be an ex partner) or worse.
