Its as though they woke up and discovered that it really is election
year. Something was needed, but they are all out of ideas. Laura
Norder has always been a good policy to wheel out, but they didn;t
    really have anyting prepared.

So lets pledge extra money - $500 million! And more resources!

Problem is someone noticed that some of the "new" spending had already
been announced last year - its not really new at all. For years Key
got away with a big number that teh small print says will be over the
next 4 or 5 years - they announce the same commitment time after time
and it all sounds like they are really doing something!

Then someone else noticed that Labour had already promised more for
the next year - so its not only a desperate gamble, its also
    Labour-lite. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11728349

National does as little as possible for public relations purposes, but
as for Health and Education they don't really care unless their focus
groups tell them they should appear to care just a little. In a
post-truth world, people are starting to listen more carefully, and
not take so much on trust - poor Bill has really stepped out of his
    depth.

For a lighter view, just look at the cartoons in the Herald over hte
    last few days . . .

When the interim Prime Minister is replaced, will it be Crusher or
Boy-wonder Bridges that get the nod as "Leader of the Opposition"?

No Rich - Labour is the party that's in a desperate gamble. Look at
Labours party-vote support in the last two general elections and in
current opinion polls - well under 30% and at their lowest point in
the MMP era. So Labour truly are fighting for survival with voters.
In comparison, National are north of 45% support.

Labour Party policies such as the one cited (1000 extra police at a
cost of $180 million) are of interest but as Labour are not close to
winning back the voter support they have lost since the 2005 election
they still don't have what it takes to get back into Government so
will never have to deliver on such promises.

On the other hand, National's announcement here:

    http://tinyurl.com/zlxmhqf

is far more detailed and will be implemented unless Labour can pull of
the most mercurial turnaround in voter support.

National does as little as possible for public relations purposes, but
as for Health and Education they don't really care unless their focus
groups tell them they should appear to care just a little. In a

All wishful thinking - and representative of the fact that Labour, the
Greens and NZ First will only ever be in government if National
    implodes.

For a lighter view, just look at the cartoons in the Herald over hte

At least there are credible leadership alternatives within National.
Andrew Little (a former Union secretary IIRC) can only be challenged
by anyone who has the support of the Trade Unions. Given that Little
is the 4th Labour parliamentary leader since Helen Clark I don't think
that Labour supporters have any credible reason to try to debate the
    stability of National's leadership.

The logic is inescapable Crash. Regrettably I do not think that Rich has the honesty to acknowledge any of it.
The Labour leadership process is undemocratic in my opinion. Unions have no place in politics other than in the same way as any other lobby group has in my opinion.
