While I support the PM's stand in the circumstances, we can and should
still celebrate Waitangi day.
While the marae at Waitangi is symbolic because of its connection to
the signing of the Treaty, the commemorations there on February 6th
don't celebrate history but provide a forum for disrespect of our PM
and political protest on current issues. The PM is right to choose to
be somewhere else that day.

I feel much better for reading that - an intelligent and thoughtful response from someone who understands the imperatives of living in the same country as people from differing backgrounds.

It always amazes me how people can talk about a group of people and assume >they all hold the same viewpoint. There are many Maori in NZ and most of
them are moderate. They defend, and explain things of value to them but
do not wish nor the feel the need to to get anti social in their behaviour.
Waitangi Day should be about this Country and its people and history in a >good way. Other countries celebrate the birth of their country. It should >bring people together and give a sense of pride to being a Kiwi.
