If New Zealand was to get anything from the two year term on the
Security Council, it was important that New Zealand be seen to
continue to take stands based on principles and the basis of
international law. It is telling that the USA abstained from voting on
this resolution co-sponsored by New Zealand.

Congratulations are due not just to McCully of course, but to the
government for taking this action. It will pay off for New Zealand
    long term.

    thing to do.

That is why any benefits will be long term - New Zealand has gained
respect in the past in international forums through being consistent,
speaking truth to power, and being seen to look for principle rather
than short term opportunism. I agree that it was the right thing to
    do.
