Anyone who doesn't vote deserves the government they get.
Some Americans who didn't vote must be regretting it now.

The Americans must be realising that they are not as much of a
democracy as they thought - they are effectively a confederation of
individual states, with systems that ensure that votes do not have
equal value for the election of President, Senate and House of
Representatives. Their system effectively disenfranchise those who do
not support either Republican or Democrat; the few independents do not
control any of the three parts of government.

Australia is similarly a confederation of States for their Senate, and
FPP for the house is subject to the problems that system showed in New
Zealand - we are now more democratic, but the change to MMP has meant
that thee have only been brief periods when one party could govern
alone - National has needed partners for nearly all of their period in government from 2008. Our media doesn't seem to understand that
    however.

In Australia, the Liberals have ot governed alone for very many years
    - they have a stable partnership with the Country Party. Here National
have a semi-stable relationship with ACT and Peter Dunne - both being
elected with help from National, but their partnership with the Moari
is not as stable, and they cannot rely on that party to continue in
coalition. Labour have had coalition with a number of splinter
parties, but their Memorandum of Understanding with tthe Green Party
has recognised the growth in support for that party - who are no
longer a single issue party, and who have shown the ability to support
policies which have been adopted by National, and who National have
sought accompdations with to try to develop an understanding as a
    possible future partner.

At present, Labour and the Greens are a bit like the Liberal/Country
coalition in Australia - a vote for either is a vote for a coalition government. Neither National or Labour are likely to be able to govern
without support from one of the Greens or NZ First - or even possibly
    both.

Various commentators have speculated that National polling will have
shown them that the next election will be very hard for them to win,
and that this is the reason for John Key resigning. Despite hype and
lies from trolls like Pooh above, National know that they have a
chance but far from a certainty of being in government ater the next
election - they know that they face not only a strong opposition in
Labour and the Green Party, but that they cannot rely on any of their
current support parties - except possibly ACT for one MP - to be there
    for them after that election.

Increasingly National is seen as having governed for the far right,
despite friendly and soothing rhetoric from John Key , and problems in
housing, employment, wages, health, education, crime and debt - all
worse than when National came into office - support for a change in
government is increasing. National may well go to election early in
the hope they can go before it becomes a rout.

Correct - but unlike past MMP Governments if National are not in
government it will be because Labour, the Greens and NZF have had to
combine to beat National and as such the party that received the most
overall party votes will be in opposition. My conjecture is that
Little, Turei, Shaw and Peters will have great difficulty keeping a
    government together.

Neither National or Labour are likely to be able to govern
without support from one of the Greens or NZ First - or even possibly
    both.

So where is the Maori party in this?

Various commentators have speculated that National polling will have
shown them that the next election will be very hard for them to win,
and that this is the reason for John Key resigning. Despite hype and
lies from trolls like Pooh above, National know that they have a
chance but far from a certainty of being in government ater the next
election - they know that they face not only a strong opposition in
    Labour and the Green Party,

So after 3 terms in government, National must logically consider
themselves well-versed in dealing with all the opposition parties.

but that they cannot rely on any of their
current support parties - except possibly ACT for one MP - to be there
    for them after that election.

Pure speculation. It has happened repeatedly since 2011 and never
have national struggled to form a government.

Increasingly National is seen as having governed for the far right,
despite friendly and soothing rhetoric from John Key ,

You expose a fallacy here. If National were seen as supporters of the
far right they would not be as popular as they are. These guys are
not one-term-wonders but gunning for a 4th straight term.

    and problems in
housing, employment, wages, health, education, crime and debt - all
worse than when National came into office -

How can this be when National were re-elected in 2011 and 2014 and
stand in the upper 40s in popular support? If you are correct, how
incompetent are the opposition parties that they cannot parley
Nationals supposed gross inadequacies into popular support?

    support for a change in
government is increasing. National may well go to election early in
the hope they can go before it becomes a rout.

Unless you can provide supporting cites that is simply a laughable
claim. National are polling higher in popular support than Labour and
the Greens combined and there is no significant change over the last
    year:

We need a good opposition party. That's how democracy works best. Plenty
    of discussion.

With Labour on its last legs perhaps National will split into two groups later on.
The Greens make some useful points, but would anyone want them as a government?

But don't ask me, two more elections will probably see me out.

    Geopelia

Come on Geo. You've got much more life in you than the Labour party ;)

    Pooh

Maybe, but I couldn't cope with life in Parliament. I'd spend the days
    sleeping on a back bench.
And if I said what I think the Speaker would chuck me out.

I'll stick to saying my piece in newsgroups and on Facebook.

    Geopelia
We hope it will be much longer than that Geopelia!
    Tony

Two more elections will see me at ninety three. But I'll carry on voting as >> long as I'm around.
Anyone who doesn't vote deserves the government they get.
Some Americans who didn't vote must be regretting it now.

The Americans must be realising that they are not as much of a
democracy as they thought - they are effectively a confederation of individual states, with systems that ensure that votes do not have
equal value for the election of President, Senate and House of Representatives. Their system effectively disenfranchise those who do
not support either Republican or Democrat; the few independents do not control any of the three parts of government.

Australia is similarly a confederation of States for their Senate, and
FPP for the house is subject to the problems that system showed in New Zealand - we are now more democratic, but the change to MMP has meant
that thee have only been brief periods when one party could govern
alone - National has needed partners for nearly all of their period in government from 2008. Our media doesn't seem to understand that
    however.

In Australia, the Liberals have ot governed alone for very many years
    - they have a stable partnership with the Country Party. Here National
have a semi-stable relationship with ACT and Peter Dunne - both being
elected with help from National, but their partnership with the Moari
is not as stable, and they cannot rely on that party to continue in coalition. Labour have had coalition with a number of splinter
parties, but their Memorandum of Understanding with tthe Green Party
has recognised the growth in support for that party - who are no
longer a single issue party, and who have shown the ability to support policies which have been adopted by National, and who National have
sought accompdations with to try to develop an understanding as a
    possible future partner.

At present, Labour and the Greens are a bit like the Liberal/Country coalition in Australia - a vote for either is a vote for a coalition government. Neither National or Labour are likely to be able to govern without support from one of the Greens or NZ First - or even possibly

You mean they're slightly better than Labour? Well done Rich. May still
    be hope for you.

Increasingly National is seen as having governed for the far right,
despite friendly and soothing rhetoric from John Key , and problems in housing, employment, wages, health, education, crime and debt - all
worse than when National came into office - support for a change in government is increasing. National may well go to election early in
the hope they can go before it becomes a rout.

Oi! Dumbo! Even those who in the past have openly supported Labour are
now leaning towards National because NATIONAL holds the centre! Hell
Angry Andy and his menagerie of marxist muppets would probably embarrass
the hero Fiddle Castro ex of Cuba.
