• Has Key stuffed up?

Thinking it might have been better for National if Key had left his
resignation till after the election. He could have just gone on the list
and resigned election night as Clark did then they wouldn't have cost us
    a costly by-election for Helensville.

as it stands he's given Labour plenty of time for further dirty politics
and boosted their morale by removing angry liddle Andy's biggest nemesis.

He didn't do that because people would be asking him if he intended to stay for
the entire fourth term and the answer was no.

In other words, he has more integrity in his little finger than Labour+Green put together.

Clark was an electorate MP and when she resigned a by-election was
needed. However she did the right thing in the circumstances (as have
many PMs defeated in a General Election) - something Sir Robert
Muldoon could not bring himself to do.

That may be the case - but hopefully only temporarily if at all. If
National make a choice of a competent leader and manage the transition
well, Labour will continue to flounder well before the election.

The opposition parties could never figure out how to counter Key's
popularity with the electorate at large.

The risk is that National never figured it out either, meaning that
whoever the new leader is will have difficulty capitalising on their predecessor's popularity. Interesting times all round.

No by election required. He will remain as electorate MP for some time.
As long as he leaves within 6 mpnths of the elction, no replacement is
    needed.
