It is very unlikely he will unseat Faafoi, who is very popular in a very
    strong
Labour electorate but why can Labour not hold onto people like this? Is it because the party is no longer viable or is it because they still have not found a leader that gets close to Helen Clark's calibre?

    Both.

Faafoi does not resonate in the electorate to anywhere near the level
of Leggett - who as Porirua Mayor had a far higher profile. Leggett
though has the disadvantage of being a fish out of water - what effect
his party-hopping has is hard to estimate. So its nondescript in a
safe Labour seat up against a well-known former Labour member now
wearing National Blue - should Leggett be selected.

Its the Union party now, whose Parliamentary leader is only partly
    chosen by his caucus.

It's strange that the leader is not chosen democratically.

All of which is true but I will still be surprised if Faafoi is not re-elected next year.

Yes and I often wonder how much that has affected the party following, after all most Labour voters probably believe in democracy and giving the unions that amount of power is completely undemocratic.
Interesting times but I would prefer a strong opposition.
