• The end of the antibiotic era

From george152@3:770/3 to All on Monday, April 04, 2016 16:35:35
I see TV has its scaremongering hat on.
Shock horror the end of the antibiotics.
We're all going to die. Germs are taking the world over.
Hopefully the next generation wont be used as part of
    animal feed...

It's more of a concern that global warming.

Yep I'm tempted to agree with you.
I think there's only one variant of antibiotics still fighting bugs, the
rest have been compromised by overuse or incorrect use in the population.

    Best, Paul

    ......

I grew up before antibiotics were invented, and we managed to survive.
I remember when penicillin came in, we thought it was going to be a miracle drug.
Now bugs are getting resistant to antibiotics anyway.
Perhaps now people will need to be more particular about hygiene.

    Yup
Germs have always been of concern. And have always been a source of
    injury and death
It's worth commenting that the naysayers have caught up with the rest of us

    Yup.
However there are ways by which doctors can fight resistant diseases
that do not include the use of antibiotics.
Sure, it takes longer and the result may not be a complete recovery but
    the systems are there.
And as we write in some lab somewhere some-one is designing the next
    generation of antibiotics

The production of new antibiotics has been increasingly dropping off for
years. I wouldn't expect that to change. A quick look at Wikipedia for example... "Since 2009, only 2 new antibiotics were approved in the
    United States."

    Try antiseptics and disinfectants first.
