Please check your new White pages for errors. There is nothing between
    Doosan and Dorchester.
Very annoying for all us Dorans!

Yes, I've sent Spark an email. It seems we have to contact our phone
    providers.

Don't throw last year's book out before checking this new one. The small
    print makes it unreadable anyway.

It's not suprising they make the odd mistake in the printed directory.
The online white pages is absolutely hopeless. Perhaps they need some
    competent staff.

Why? Its not as though there is any real competition; they are clearly
in the "milk it" phase of "free enterprise." If you were a
shareholder I'm sure you would applaud them wasting money on a product
they are not likely to lose - or are you arguing for the good old days

hardly ever use the printed phone books any more)

No, that's the worst thing to do. Forcing everyone to pay for something that
a small minority use isn't just.

Of course I'm not arguing for the days of the state owned telephone
system when people used to shudder in their boots, or wait for a death
in the family before they made a toll call. Not to mention the long wait
for installation or fault repairs. The absolute rort of not being
permitted to use your own telephone, which you could only obtain
overseas; instead having to rent one paying month after month after
month ..... The online phone directory is hopeless. It simply doesn't
find more than half of what I search for. They should forget the fancy
search system and just list the books.

Perhaps they are going to send out another book at some stage with everybody
    in it.
This latest one may be just for people with a home business.
But as they just leave the books out by the road where anybody could pinch them, whether we get them is just luck.

If I want a business I just check the internet. Don't we all?

Perhaps it's time the government ran the postal service and the phones.

To an extent that depends on whether people wanting to find you use
the book, or just the internet version. But I do sympathise, if a
service is worth doing, it should be to a reasonable standard. A phone
book is just a listing from a database; there is really no excuse for
missing a section of surnames from that listing. I do expect there
will be another book, but it may be a few years away.

The government do have many systems that work well for related lists -
motor vehicle registration is one, and chances are they have a reverse
phone listing avaialble to police and security services so that they
can identify people. from a phone number. It should be fairly easy for
either government o a number of private organisations to run a list,
but the fashion now is for government to get others to do things for
them - often at higher cost and lower quality, or to just not do
things at all, and let people fall through the cracks - business
profits are more important than people or our society.

I suspect printed books will disappear at some stage - too many use
mobile phones which for some strange reason do not get listed, and a
lot of people don;t want to be found. The French put electronic
devices in each home with a directory service built in - it was
overtaken by later technology, but at present we seem to have the
    worst of both worlds.

No we don't. You can opt out of being in the directory and you can opt out of receiving the phone books and just use the whitepages.co.nz or google.

The paper books simply reflect whitepages.co.nz at the time of printing.

If you are one of the 30 listings there you can be found in the online

I need to be in the book so people can find me.

Didn't take long for Dickbot to hijack the thread into a whinge about the gummint.

You do not have to opt out of the directory to use whitepages.co.nz or
Google. Where do you get your strange ideas?

The paper books simply reflect whitepages.co.nz at the time of printing.

Except for the missing entries - have you not been following the

Geo - the printed version of the telephone directory represents a
technology that 'the internet' has rendered redundant. Back then an annually-distributed printed directory was all we had. I well remember
that businesses that missed out on an up-to-date yellow pages
directory listing could well fail because of that. However now we
have access to an electronic directory that is updated far more often
    than once a year.

To find a phone number, look at whitepages.co.nz - no printed
directory needed - and if you can use Google you will find the number
far faster via the search facility.

I don't disagree with you very often but I disagree with you on this.
The white and yellow pages search are crap.
If they used Google search technology you would have a point.
But they don't . In fact it has got worse. When the white pages were first on
    line
    it worked better.
You might be surprised on how many people don't have access to the internet and they have no intention of using it.
Plus there would be a very large number have it and only use it once in a blue
    moon.
The book also have limitations. mostly because some total fuckwit changed 3 col to 4 col
and in font that is unreadable for a very large numbers of uses.

Yes, I've sent Spark an email. It seems we have to contact our phone
    providers.

Don't throw last year's book out before checking this new one. The
    small
    print makes it unreadable anyway.

It's not suprising they make the odd mistake in the printed directory. >>>The online white pages is absolutely hopeless. Perhaps they need some >>>competent staff.

Why? Its not as though there is any real competition; they are clearly
in the "milk it" phase of "free enterprise." If you were a
shareholder I'm sure you would applaud them wasting money on a product
they are not likely to lose - or are you arguing for the good old days
when things like a phone book were propvided by the state-owned
    telephone systtem?

(Its a slow day on nz.general - I'm probably like most people that
hardly ever use the printed phone books any more)

    ..............

I need to be in the book so people can find me.

Perhaps it's time the government ran the postal service and the phones.

Geo - a quick whitepages search showed this:

    http://whitepages.co.nz/white-all/doran/auckland-region/2/

If you are one of the 30 listings there you can be found in the online
    phone book.

    .........

Thank you. I'm in that list.

I think this latest book may just be for people with home businesses.
Perhaps they will deliver a book with all listings later.
But as they leave the books up by the mailbox anybody could pinch them.
The printing is too small to read anyway.

Everybody seems to have mobile phones these days.
If I start using taxis I'll need a mobile to call one when away from home. >I've got St John's button of course for home and garden.

To find a phone number, look at whitepages.co.nz - no printed
directory needed - and if you can use Google you will find the number
far faster via the search facility.

    .............

    Thank you, I'll do that.

    ..........

Just tried it, and there I am!

Then there are those who have fiber and
    phone systems like 2phone.
    There's no NZ phone books

Both the white and yellow pages are an anachronism. I have not used either
in the better part of a decade (other than putting underneath a computer monitor).

The other white pages arrived yesterday. Everything seems fine with those.
