    No, you cannot do this.

Do you mean you can't Dial US 800 and 888 toll free number from NZ.

No, I mean you can't dial *NZ* 0800 numbers from outside NZ.

In bound 0800 and 0508 calls into NZ should not have any technical
reason why it can't happen apart from tariffing problems with the US carriers. ie. a message advising that this call with be charge at international rates..

For some unexplained reason [no money in it for them perhaps?] Telecom do
    not allow this.

    ???????????????????????????????????

B?S - YOU are completely incorrect.

Apart from the initial "incorrect" assumption of ALL 0800 numbers being THE SAME ..
    THEY ARE NOT

There are TWO types of 0800 numbers in New Zealand
INTERNAL (called only from WITHIN NZ)
    &
INTERNATIONAL (called from any of 55 overseas countries)

Here's the NZ Telecom's OWN marketing page
Advertising that THESE are FREE for overseas callers to access

    As
    Yes -
(TO BLOCK ANTI-SPAM-CALLS THAT CAN BE MADE TO PRIVATE 0800 PHONE-HOME NUMBERS) Telecom nz
DOES NOT ALLOW ANY INCOMING OVERSEAS CALLER TO ACCESS (INTERNAL ONLY = within NZ) PRIVATELY HELD (AND SOME COMPANY) 0800 NUMBERS

However .. there are "special" INTERNATIONAL 0800 NUMBERS available to purchase.

THOSE ARE ACCESSIBLE - from about 55 countries, (as well as there being 255 that can have an INTERNATIONAL 0800 number - redirected OUT (of NZ) towards, to
allow overseas callers to CALL a NZ Business after hours, with the call being redirected to any of
    255 OTHER countries..

    So your answer is bollocks.

I don't know the answer but a lot can happen in 14 years. Are you sure that both kinds of 0800 services were available in 2003?
