I honestly feel like the '70s was the best era for sitcoms. They didn't
have to be so formal and stuffy, and they were allowed to tackle adult
themes as long as they did it tastefully. I still find shows like Mary
Tyler Moore, All in the Family, and the 70s seasons of Happy Days really
    funny.

The '80s (my decade) went back to the wholesome, perfect families of the
'50s for some reason. Even worse, they would constantly have preachy
"very special" episodes. The only 80s sitcoms I still enjoy are Night
    Court and ALF.

The Simpsons was a middle finger to those wholesome 80s shows like
Growing Pains. The only 90s "sitcoms" I enjoyed were the animated ones
like The Simpsons and King of the Hill. Then all the shows started to
get really vulgar and mean-spirited. There was a meta South Park episode
where they ponder if they were the ones lowered the bar for TV.

I haven't watched any 21st century sitcoms, unless you count the
animated shows. All those Chuck Lorre shows really irritate me.
