Too much energy, he outran it :-)

    Anyway, he was really something.

The younger crowd likely do not realize what a big
deal he and his contemporaries were in the deadly
    dull whitebread post-WW2 cultural landscape.

And how Mom and Pop freaked out over songs like Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I
Put A Spell On You", which sold 250,000 copies nationwide before being
banned from airwaves, only to sell another quarter-million through word-of-mouth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFcusdmFwgQ

Well, if you want to make something very popular, ban it :-)

"Juke-joint" knee-grow music was sure to ruin America, or
so the WW2 generation was convinced. Why, white girls
might lust for knee-grow boyz and be "ruined for life" !!!

At that time, Little Richard songs were considered
"acceptable" only if Pat Boone sang them...

Oh well, maybe rock-n-roll did ruin America, but I think it
was more a symptom of deeper discontent and fractures
than a cause. Popular music is more *about* something
already out there, not so much an attempt to invent
something new. The deadly dull whitebread post-WW2
environment simply was not going to last very long, people
cannot stand to live that way unless they are sucking down
    Mother's Little Helpers like candy.

Nobody knew, and most still do not, what the
Harlem slang term "rock-and-roll" really MEANT :-)

    "Tutti Frutti" original lyrics:
