The True Story of Court Cases Cock Ups and Collateral Damage by Harry
Pearce
I didn't take much notice of the subtitle before I started reading this - just saw 'Video Nasties' and that it was free on Kindle so jumped straight in. It's basically the somewhat self-pitying, self-righteous rantings of a 80s video shop owner who was prosecuted for renting out nasties, although he'd never actually watched one and had no interest in horror films whatsoever*. Anyway, the book is badly written/proofed and the author comes across as an absolute tosser. Even through the unfairness and injustice of the events that unfold, not to mention the absolute lunacy of the court
case, you still can't help hoping he ends up getting sent down and gang- bummed in the showers.
For example, he goes on about how it was a friend of the vindictive owner
of a rival video shop, who happened to be a bent ex-policeman, who dobbed
him in and what a cunt's trick THAT was. It's not until later that he mentions that HE, the author, dobbed the other bloke in first for renting
out porn! He sees no hypocrisy or wrongdoing in this at all. He also never passes an opportunity to mention one of his many other great achievements
in life, table tennis champion, professional footballer, educational
pioneer and of course his unquestionable moral and intellectual superiority above the police, lawyers, judges, society, the world in fact. He doesn't seem to know how to use google properly either, referring to the Hungerford Massacre as being committed by 'a Mr Ryan I think'. Then, in a postscript designed to outline the current status of the films he was prosecuted for,
he can find no mention of Zombie Holocaust online at all ('perhaps it
changed its title').
The author got right on my nerves in case you hadn't noticed. But, as
someone who got into all this shit in the first place through their parents owning a video shop during the same era, it still made interesting and nostalgic reading. It also gets across just what a ridiculous escapade the whole video nasty thing was, in case you hadn't noticed that either.
* Until forced to sit through several during the trial. One redeeming
feature was that he came out of this singing the praises of The Evil Dead
and The Burning. It's made me want to revisit the latter which I haven't
seen in donkeys.

Will have to check this one out. Thanks for the heads-up.
I also recommend VHS FOREVER: PSYCHOTRONIC PEOPLE, currently streaming
free on Prime if you're nostalgic for that era.
