Recently acquired the Herschell Gordon Lewis "Feast" box set from Arrow
films. Which contains 14 of his infamous movies.

Jesus H Christ, this guy made some shite. Most of the films seem heavily
padded with pointless dialogue or extraneous scenes to make up the run time.

Bad dubbing, chopping editing, unsynched audio.

That's not to say they aren't without their charm of course, and are
still a lot more coherent than the likes of Franco.

But even so, people actually PAID to see this at Drive Ins????

i have a soft spot for the wizard of gore and especially the gore gore
girls. that one is great and i'd have loved to see more of the main
    character.

Down south here, the piled in a car on a dare to see who could stomach the mayhem of "Blood Feast" !!

Keep in mind, that was a time of mass cultural seismic shifting bordering on psychosis!!

Kennedy was shot and your Liverpudlians came over here and busted a few norms as well!!

The rules had changed snd extremism had us in a rasslin' headlock, baby!!

He started with Dave Friedman making softcore porn and nudie titles, hence the Playboy Playmate and other nubiles in his flicks and very cheap production values.
Like Roger Corman and his ilk, cheap was the name of the game and he was very hands on with these gore movies - he got the slaughterhouse stuff (like Savini did years later, infinitely better of course) to make the crazy gore, he played the tympani
music on Blood Feast, and I think they took turns being cameraman, he's the radio voice in the background, etc.
They were the first real gore and slasher movies of all time (Grand Guignol style), around a decade ahead of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and .Black Christmas.
As others have said, there is a certain charm in the bad acting, horrible scripts, cheap fx, and so much more. The Gruesome Twosome is hilarious with the fake old lady constantly talking to her stuffed wildcat Napoleon, and they actually cut to Napoleon
    for the reaction shots. :-)

Thanks for the heads-up about the box set. Who knew they would make it to that level? :-)

Michael Weldon would say you are a big fan of what he coined “psychotronic” movies. ;-)

These movies are a time capsule and crazy/wacky fun as well. They don’t get much credit for the achievement of launching the gory or slasher movies trends which became quite lucrative many tears later.
They are to horror what Lenny Bruce was to comedy.

It was one of the best magazines; fantastic reading. The first book was
also exceptional and my copy is well thumbed.

You could literally be reading on the same issue multiple times and find new bits.
