No, not that awful BBC series from earlier this year, which started well
but proved extremely anti-climatic. This is a brand new show, currently
being screened on Fox, on Sky TV.
Set in the present day, this version has mankind all but wiped out by a
giant electromagnetic pulse, following a meteor shower that hits the earth. Of those that survived, either because they were underground or electromagnetically shielded, they find themselves being picked off by robotic dog-like cyborgs.
The series is largely divided between 2 groups of survivors, some french scientist and a group of soldiers, stationed at an observatory up in the alps. Who are trying to find a way of disrupting the aliens signals,
which control the robot dogs. And a biologist in London, played by
Gabriel Byrne, who's studying the remains of some of the cyborgs, to see
if he can make some sort of bacteriologic weapon against them.
Got a real, "28 Days Later" post-apocalyptic feel to it and there's some great action scenes, as we discover these cyborg dogs can fire
projectiles and whilst aren't completely bullet proof, are extremely difficult to put down.
Of course, the series owes very little to HG Wells original story (no
sign of any tripod war machines, at least not yet anyway). But is none
the less a great piece of modern day sci-fi.
