In the usual alternate-reality where the square-cube law doesn't exist
alien giant octopuses lay waste to a swathe of Mexico and the US, Texas protected from invasion only by a giant wall (paid for by the aliens).
There is apparently no air-travel in this alternate reality, so when plucky heiress and annoying war-photographer get stuck in Mexico their options for going home are wait 6 months for a ferry or walk through the "infected zone".

Decided to watch this because Netflix won't stop nagging me to see MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT. Pleasantly surprised when it turns out not to be the found- footage actioner the first scene implies, but a talky relationship-based drama where not much happens. Beautifully shot on a low budget - Gareth Edwards scripts, directs, does visual effects and captains a team on Question of
Sport - with a real sense of location. It's even got a call-out to
AGUIRRE: WRATH OF GOD. Slightly confused "who are the real monsters" thread but the characters work well with annoying cameraman turning out to have some depths - I think that's called character development.

I enjoyed MONSTERS and it's easy to see why director Gareth Edwards was
picked to helm GODZILLA a few years later.

The sequel isn't anywhere near as good as the original and is more of a
war film with monsters thrown in.
