Haunt (2019)
Harper (Katie Stevens), struggling with coming to terms with her abusive boyfriend, is talked into a night on the town on Halloween night by her roommate Bailey (Lauryn Alisa McClain). At a local bar they meet up with friends Angela (Shazi Raja), Mallory (Schuyler Helford), Nathan (Will
Brittain) and Evan (Andrew Lewis Caldwell). After the loutish Evan
causes some trouble the group heads out in search of an extreme haunted
house. They find one where the gate keeper is a silent, creepy clown, no
phones are allowed and one must sign a waiver against any liability.
Elements that would have most turning around and getting out of there.
Thrill seekers that they are, and otherwise we’d have a very short
runtime, they enter the fun house.
A stalker boyfriend bent on meeting up with his battered girlfriend and
killers in masks do not make for a pleasant night.
The Halloween haunted house sub genre has been a popular one the last
few years with releases such as THE FUNHOUSE MASSACRE, THE HOUSES THAT
OCTOBER BUILT and HELL FEST. It is easy to see why. The theme ties
nicely into a holiday where the viewer is looking to be scared and film production costs can be kept low by having a small cast of characters in
one defined location for most if not all of the running time. But that
does mean the filmmakers have to bring something extra to make the film
stand out. Whether it is direction, a smart script, or solid acting.
HAUNT does that. The viewer knows the tropes and what to expect. HAUNT
exceeds those expectations with its direction, production value and
thrills. Include nasty kills created with practical effects (and
augmented a bit with CGI) and we have a haunted house that is worth a visit.
