The Houses That October Built (2014)

    Dir: Bobby Roe
Wir: Zack Andrews, Bobby Roe, Jason Zada

It is Halloween time. The leaves are changing colours. The air is cool,
crisp. Shops are promoting candy, cheap costumes and plastic jack-o’-lanterns. It is the favourite time of year for many. Especially
those that love the scares to be found in a haunted house attraction.
Five such friends rent a class A motorhome and tour Texas looking for
extreme haunted houses. They document the trip via hand held cameras and wireless cameras placed in and outside the RV. Not only the houses but
also the performers who like to dress up and shock the patrons get
    screen time.

One of the group, unhappy at the lack of extreme in the extreme haunted
houses they’ve visited so far, stumbles across a traveling house located
in Louisiana this year that promises the ultimate in horror. Despite the
weird occurrences experienced by the group he manages to talk them into attending one last haunted house. On Halloween night.

This is a found footage film With that comes all the pros and cons of
the sub-genre since its founding with the release of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST
and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT that catapulted the sub-genre to a household
name. Shaky cam. Often poorly lit. Chaotic. Camera people getting
butchered but somehow still able to record the horrifying act. HOUSES
suffers from it all. I don’t even know the fates of all the characters
at the end of the film due to the low light helter skelter scenes that
    comprise the climax.

Having voiced the concerns many have of the sub-genre there is enough to
like here to make it an above average horror film. The banter between
the five as they cruise America’s highways looking for the next scare
are realistic and natural. The footage shot inside real haunted house attractions brings out the fun factor of those places. And the film is
    creepy at times.

Watching HOUSES and putting aside one’s disbelief in the film’s logic
can make for an entertaining night. In other words, shut off your brain
    and go for a ride.

I have that lined up for tonight. I'm still one short as Netflix's offering looks like a right load of BLM, VIRTUAL SIGNALLING SHITE. And we've all had quite enough fucking nonsense for one year.

And it has Malcolm McDowell. I'll have to check that out when it hits DVD.
