Save Yourselves! (2020)
Dir: Alex Huston Fischer, Eleanor Wilson
Wir: Alex Huston Fischer, Eleanor Wilson
Su (Sunita Mani GLOW) and Jack (John Reynolds STRANGER THINGS) are a
Brooklyn hipster couple in their 30’s whose days are spent working on
their laptops or with their faces plastered to their phones. Nearly
everything about them is defined by the Internet. The addiction to the
zeroes and ones is so great that they choose it over sex. At a party
while talking to their globe trotting friend Raph (Ben Sinclair) them
come to the realization that they should be doing more with their lives.
Together they decide to head to Raph’s cabin and spend a week without
using their phones or laptops. No Internet. A week to cleanse themselves
of the digital toxin. Their timing is impeccable, aliens invade and the
couple is oblivious.
SAVE YOURSELVES! Is a lighthearted comedy–drama that focuses on the two lovers and how they cope with living in a cabin without access to
Reddit, YouTube or Facebook and then an extraterrestrial invasion. There
are plenty of quiet moments that pass between the two as they struggle
without the Internet as a crutch for everything from conversation to
starting a camp fire. It is not NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. Or BATTLE LOS ANGELES.
While the film is a bit long at 93 minutes as not much happens, I did
enjoy the company of the couple for that time. The characters are
realistic and there is a genuine chemistry between Su and Jack. My only complaint with the film is the ending, which I’ll not go into so as not
to spoil it.
As a low key film about an endearing couple who grapple with everyday
and world ending tasks, SAVE YOURSELVES! is appealing.
