A half-decent low-budget British horror film, let down by the not very
funny comedy elements in the early parts and SOME of the performances. I
wasn't particularly excited about another film featuring a group of blokes
lost in the wilderness together, but as it stars Rafe Spall and was set in Scandinavia (No, I'm not bored of the Nordic Noir yet) I thought it
couldn't be all bad. It's a pity the other actors weren't anywhere close to being in Spall's acting league, and it's even more of a pity that the badly judged humour detracted from the sense of fear that builds up quite nicely throughout the film. I'm not sure that the flashbacks to the friend's
murder were necessary either, they were just another distraction if
anything and seemed to be tacked on to try and add a bit more depth, WHICH
THEY DIDN'T. Paid £9.99 for this cunt on Amazon Video, but I'm sure I'll
watch it a few more times, so it was probably worth it.

I liked it, even though it seemed like the writer started off with one
story, changed his mind and then went off in a different direction.

I think I must be mellowing in my old age - I even liked THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX and HELLRAISER: JUDGEMENT.

I can't understand how anyone can defend HELLRAISER:JUDGMENT. Cheaply
made so that Dimension films can hang onto the property, cliche
cardboard characters, and the scenes with the auditor and assessor meant
to shock were stupid. It was a drag to make it through the entire film.

I enjoyed the film. It's available via Netflix streaming in the U.S.

In regards to the friend's murder it is an important plot point to the character arc of the protagonist. I'm intentionally being a bit vague to
avoid spoilers. Without touches like that, THE RITUAL would have been
just another people lost in the woods being stalked film.

The arm. I mean FUCK ME. Overall I must admit I really rather enjoyed
it. I was particularly amused by the fact that Chris O Dowd seemed to
believe he was in an episode of Red Dwarf while everyone else played it
dead straight. The arm though. Another example of a director hiding
behind unnecessary and inappropriate humour. I would have liked more to
have been made of the situation back on earth, which was a far more
interesting story, but I guess that's what the whole Cloverfield deal
is. I don't know what the Cloverfield deal is. Fun film though!

Yeah, half decent film, all a bit DESCENT in set-up if not execution. Agreed the flashbacks ended up a bit irrelevant. The set-up was that in some way
our hero was going to have to revisit his actions - like literally revisit his actions - the supermarket was in the fucking forest - and then he didn't. I think they just forgot.

And why the fuck was it filmed in Romania? Almost as bad as BRITANNIA in the Czech Republic. BREXIT MEANS BREXIT.

I took it to be a bit of misdirection. If you think about it too much, it's a cheap trick that lacks consistency but it did throw me off the trail pretty well.

You're more charitable than me thinking it was intentional. My theory is that they filmed some sort of revisit to the events of the night and then when they watched the footage it was all a bit naff - so they said let's do "he hits it with an axe and runs away" instead.
