A novel by Max Brooks
Like Max Brooks' WORLD WAR Z, DEVOLUTION's narrative is told by an investigator. Unlike the zombie epic which spanned the globe, this novel focuses on what happened to a eco-tech community built in a remote area
of Washington. The investigator has compiled excerpts from a journal
written by one of the residents of the neo-hippy community alongside the transcribed interviews of family and local officials. The plot is in the
title. The diverse group living in the high tech homes of what the
corporate creators want to become a sustainable model for the rest of
the U.S. is laid siege to by a low-tech tribe of bigfoot scavenging for
food when their habitat is destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount
Rainier.
Part back door survival guide (Brooks enthusiastically details what it
takes to live another day under constant threat from nature), part fast
paced action adventure, DEVOLUTION is a thrilling read. Character
development is not disregarded in the rush however. Kate, the author of
the journal quoted by the investigator starts out as a tightly wound
people pleaser who comes out the other side a very different person.
Throw in a bit of biting satire directed at the neo-hippies and it makes
for an exciting page turner.
Recommended.
