A newly widowed mother on the verge of a mental breakdown takes her
troubled teenage daughter, Leah, to live in a spooky house near the woods
(I don't know how they've got the cheek to keep starting horror movies like this). Leah has a bit of an obsession with the occult and when her mother's behaviour becomes unbearably unpredictable she goes out in the woods to
perform a ritual designed to end her mother's life. Strange and sinister
things begin to happen, but are they due to the Pyewacket curse or to
Leah's own mental breakdown?
A predictable story but with plenty of atmosphere and very well-acted. The director's debut, Blackcountry, is also available on Prime and, as it too
is set in the woods, I'll be giving that a try next.
