One of the lesser known cannibal films from the early 80s, this time set
in Indonesia. A group of anthropology students go into the jungle to
study primitive tribes, but their raft upturns, seperating them from
each other, and soon find themselves being picked off by the local
wildlife and a savage cannibal tribe which happen to live nearby.
Also known as Savage Terror and Primitif, the director apparently got
the idea for this from watching Italian cannibal films, so decided to do
his own version in his native Indonesia using local actors. Indeed, one
of the group is played by Barry Prima, a familiar face in Indonesian
cinema.
The plot borrows heavily from "Last Cannibal World" and other previous cannibal films. Some scenes seem to have been lifted directly from them, particularly where a couple of the students are taken back to their cave
and imprisoned in a bamboo cage, where the native kids pee on them.
There's the usual yucky animal violence, including a crocodile being
killed and an Orangutan having its head split open. Although, the film's soundtrack is extremely bizarre, which opens with Kraftwerk's "We Are
Funky Robots" and also features music by Jean Michelle Jarre and also
lifts some of John Williams soundtrack from "Star Wars".
This one had numerous VHS releases in the early 80s, but has yet to
receive a legitimate release on disc. For most people, the only way to
see this is on a grey-market release, or torrent stream, which are all
taken from various VHS rips, which are in full screen and most of which contain foreign subtitles (the film can be found on YouTube, if you hunt around).
However, it seems that the film has been restored in the last couple of
years and a nice, clean HD master of the film, in its original
widescreen ratio, does now exist. But, to my knowledge has only been
shown on Indonesian TV and is in Indonesian language only. So hopefully
a disc release, preferably with an English dubbed soundtrack, should be available at some point in the future.
Although, your desire to see it will of course depend on your love for Cannibal movies. But, if nothing else, it is an interesting curiousity
piece when compared to its contemporaries.
Here's what the newly restored version looks like... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mmKWn8rBao

Because I’ve got just about every LP he ever recorded. That’s from Wunderlich Pops 8 from 1978.
