A small town Sheriff (Kevin Durand - TVs Swamp Thing, The Strain) is
suddenly inundated with reports of farm animals going missing, which
ties in with the appearance of strange footprints around the town and
the bodies of wild animals being found mutilated.
When the bodies of a group of hunters are found suspended from trees in
the woods outside of town, it becomes apparent there's something
"abominable" lurking in the woods and it aint no snowman.
As the strange creature attacks become more frequent, the town find
themselves taking shelter in the church, as the sheriff and his deputy
attempt to fend off whatever it is that's trying to break in.
Not bad, but not brilliant. Very little is shown of the creature until
right till the very end, which works for most monster movies. But as
you're never quite sure wether this actually is a monster, or just a combination of wild animal attacks and practical jokers playing pranks,
it doesn't do much to build tension. You're just left wondering "Are
they going to show this bloody thing, or what?".
The end battle was interesting, but let down by some dodgy CGI.
Originally released as "Dark Was the Night" in the US, the film was subsequently retitled "Monster Hunter" for its UK release, presumably to capitalise on the indie horror comedy Troll Hunter, which had been
moderagtely successful, which works against it. As those expecting a
horror comedy are in for a dissapointment.
Overall, a moderately entertaining film which passes the time. Worth a
watch if there's nothing else on, but there's nothing particulalrly
outstanding about it.
