Anyone remember this one-off Halloween special the BBC showed in 1992?
Just given this a rewatch as I've been reviewing it for my YouTube channel
A drama, masquerading as a "Most-Haunted" style reality show, featuring
well known TV personalities Michael Parkinson, Mike Smith, Sarah Greene
and Craig Charles, who were essentially just playing themselves,
investigating a "haunted" semi-detached home in North London.
Caused a bit of a stir as the show was played so straight, that people
who hadn't read the TV guide and had tuned in after the show had started actually thought they were watching a real, live documentary and were
terrified they were seeing genuine ghostly activity on their TV screens.
Though it should have been obvious by the end that it was obviously a
spoof as the ghosts invade the studio, causing chaos and Michael
Parkinson appears to be possessed.
I remember watching it and spotting bits ripped off The Exorcist,
Amityville Horror, Poltergeist and The Entity (probably a few other
films too).
What was hilarious was the amount of people who were, essentially, just complaining that the BBC had made them feel stupid. There were reports
of children who had stayed up to watch it that had been traumatised.
Though more seriously, one chap with learning dissabilities actually
commited suicide after the show, because the central heating in his
house produced strange banging noises, like the knocking heard in the
show, and thought it was ghosts.
I know the BBC never repeated it, but its now available on DVD.
Anyone see this when it originally went out?
