Bit of a nostalgic post. But, as per the subject heading, the House of
Horrors was essentially one of those old style fan sites, in which the webmaster reviewed and recommended his favourite cult films.
For many years it was probably the most popular horror website on the
internet and indeed was one of the inspirations for my own.
I believe it's webmaster, a chap named John Wheatman I believe, used to frequent these parts back in the late 90s when Usenet was still a big thing.
However, these old style fan pages, started going out of style in the
early 2000s as horror fans became more interested in reviews of upcoming
films and disc releases. And sites like Bloody Disgusting and Arrow in
the Head became the go-to websites.
It seems some effort was made to modernise House of Horrors in 2005, by changing the opening page into a news section for upcoming films and
reviews, which ran for a further 10 years. Although, the old part of the
site seemed very neglected. Graphics were missing, having not been
re-uploaded after changing servers and it contained many broken links.
The final update seemed to have been in 2015 and then became a ghost site.
Then last year (2018) something strange happened, the site appeared to
have been given a makeover. No new articles, but more proffesional
looking, however the main page also contained links to Bollywood movies.
Now, visiting www.houseofhorrors.com just takes you to a load of links
to Bollywood films. Seems he let the domain expire, and whoever snatched
it up copied the site and suck a load of dodgy movie links on there,
before ditching the old site entirely. Indeed a similar thing happened
to the old Cabinet of Dr Casey website which was the oldest horror
website on the net.
So, another one bites the dust.
I often wonder how much longer I should keep my website going, but as
long as promo companies keep sending me free stuff to review I'll hang
on to it for now.
