Born in Dallas, he now lives in Webster Groves, Missouri.
I don't know how many of his books/stories would be called horror, but the critics certainly say that some of them fall into that category, as well as the
occult category. (He's also contributed to at least one vampire anthology.) One
early horror novel
of his was the 1976 "Bonegrinder."
Not, of course, to be confused with the 46-year-old comedian/screenwriter from TV's "30 Rock"! Or with the 60-year-old Canadian historian.
His most popular books seems to be from the Frank Quinn series.

(Q&A from 2018)
Excerpt:
Q: "You've written private eye, serial killer, psychological suspense — every
genre in crime fiction. Why have you now turned to the spy thriller?"
A: "All crime fiction is about people doing bad things. In the espionage genre,
they're doing big bad things. I guess you could say I'm interested in evil-doing on a global scale."
Q: "But your work is distinguished by your — what shall we call them, sympathetic villains? Even the serial killers."
A: "Human villains, anyway. Humans seldom think of themselves as being bad. Even if they're doing unquestionably evil deeds, they're being forced to. That holds true with the espionage genre. The villains are serving their country. Or
keeping faith with
some sort of ideology. They're determined and courageous. Which is what makes them so dangerous."
