Interesting to see how the films change over the course of the series.

The original was really more of a drama more than anything else. Sure,
you could categorise it as a thriller, but you certainly couldn't call
    it an action film.

Part 2 however, was just pure exploitation trash. It would have been a
good film, but for the 2 sickening rape scenes. Which resulted in this
film being VERY heavily censored in the US, UK and elsewhere upon its original release

Part 3 was where things got silly, being a pure action film, as Bronson
picks up a 30 calibre machine gun and runs around the Bronx, in the
middle of a riot, cutting down punks in half with it.

Then there were Parts 4 & 5, which were notably different as Bronson graduates from killing street punks, to taking on organised crime
    syndicates.

I like all the DEATH WISH films to varying degrees, however I have a
VERY hard time sitting through the rape scenes in Part 2. Stories abound
that the scene with the maid took 6 days to film, half the crew quit as
they were so sickened by what Winner was trying to shoot and one of the actors was actually violently sick after being so appalled at what he'd
had to do in one scene.

That scene has been cut to varying degrees in most releases, but the Australian BD is uncut and contains the cut US theatrical version on a seperate DVD, along with some other alternate cuts. Whereas the current
US release has both versions on the BD.

I remember watching the old UK VHS version back in the mid-80s, which
was similarly cut to the US release and that was bad enough. Indeed,
when shown on ITV roundabout 1990 the rape scenes were removed in their entirity.

Probably my preffered version of Death Wish 2 (and I know I'm going to
get flack for this) is the one shown on ITV4, which is basically the cut
US theatrical version, but with a few more edits to the rape scenes.
They show you enough to know whats happening, but don't dwell on it too
    much.

These movies have some of the best rape scenes. And Jimmy Page score.

i too like them all but nothing tops part 3 for sheer idiocy and fun.
i'll have the director's version of part 2 thanks - yes it's rapey but
    its only pretend after all.
if i got upset about someone being bazooka'd in part 3 everyone would
wonder what i was smoking after all.

Indeed, the last 30mins was just non-stop mindless violence. With
Bronson blowing rioting thugs away with an M30 machine gun.

i'll have the director's version of part 2 thanks - yes it's rapey but

Aussie release by Umbrella is arguably the best version. Got 2 & 3 on
the BD, plus a load of interviews and extras.

And it has a DVD of the R-rated version, which also contains some
alternate versions. Namely the US TV version, which cuts the sex and
violence but has some additional dialogue scenes. Plus the Greek VHS
version, which was uncut but had some additional scenes from the TV
version in it. However, these last two versions appear to have been
transferred from a VHS source. So quality isn't the best.

US BD has both the Uncut and US theatrical versions of part 2 on BD and
some of the extra features from the Umbrella disc, but not all. Though
it does have a commentary track with some Charles Bronson biographer
which isn't on the Aussie disc.

Incidentally, the soundtrack is available from Jimmy Page's website in a
box set with the soundtrack to some other film called Lucifer.

if i got upset about someone being bazooka'd in part 3 everyone would
wonder what i was smoking after all.

Indeed, but joking aside, rape is something I think most people find
deeply unsettling (yes, I know I have made many crass jokes about the
subject in the past). I remember being repulsed by the cut UK version,
    which was bad enough.
