I suppose I must have been vaguely aware of this film series but I'd never had the least inclination to look at any of them until the review of this
new entry turned up in Fortean Times.

This is a reboot, however they are also on about still making sequels
to the original series as well as this one. So things are going to get confusing.
If you ever do check out the original Puppet Master films, it's like
the people who wrote each sequel hadn't seen the previous one as the
chap who created the puppets seems to change from being an old guy who
loved his puppets to a total psychopath from film to film. The
backstory changes frequently and parts 3 & 7 are prequels that follow
on from each other, plus the chronology is all over the place as to
when these are supposed to happen.
But, they are good fun for the most part.
I take it they're all a bit Nazi-y then? Which reminds me...

Not quite, originally Andre Toulon, the Puppet Master, was fleeing Nazi Germany and in one of the prequels he actually sets his puppets on them.
In the new reboot, Toulon was working for them and was a Joseph Mengele
type character.
I suppose I must have been vaguely aware of this film series but I'd never had the least inclination to look at any of them until the review of this
new entry turned up in Fortean Times. Apparently it's the 13th one - I've
no idea if they are all nazi themed or whether it's just this one but
that's what appealed, as well as the involvement of a few old horror icons. The story is, a convention is being held to 'celebrate' the anniversary of
a series of murders carried out by a nazi nutter who tortured to death a number of jews and the like using his evil killer puppets 30 years ago. At the convention, there is to be an auction where attendees can bring along their own killer puppets to auction off (?!). Unfortunately, when the
puppets come close to the scene of the original murders, they are brought back to life by forces transmitted through spikes that are embedded in the tomb of the dead nazi.
It's a very patchy movie, doesn't really make the most of the daftness of
the killer puppets and the potential for sick humour, but the cast are generally good and the trashy gore effects pleasing. I might be tempted to check out some of the other films, but this one is definitely going into my small Nazi-horror-comedy collection.
It's a very patchy movie...
This one was scripted by the guy who wrote and directed Bone Tomahawk,
Riot In Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete, all of which are
far more grim but well worth checking out.

Interesting. I enjoyed Bone Tomahawk and added Cell Block 99 to my Netflix list when it was mentioned here recently.

At this point if he is writing and/or directing, it's a must see for
me. Dragged was too slow at times, but still better than 99% of what
I've seen this year.
Not been great, has it? The 'What We Do In The Shadows' tv series has
really picked up after the first couple of episodes, the only really remarkable thing that's happened so far in 2019.
