The UK is becoming more like China every year when it comes to the Internet.
Whilst I view very little porn ("yeah, right" I hear you sneer), I find
this move to prevent people from accessing "adult" content very disturbing.
Rather than noting that this is out of step with other countries, which
would appear to show the UK is being overly zealous, they are instead
lauding this as Britian "leading the way to protect children from
innapropriate content". Which is an age old excuse that has been used to justify far too many things being banned or censored over the years.
From books, to comics to films.
The REAL concern here is once these filters are in place and preventing
people from seeing only the "adult" material the govt see fit. What is
to then stop them from expanding this to other websites the govt doesn't
like? Whilst few would object to the blocking of Jihadi propaganda
sites, what about people with dissenting political views? Bad taste joke
sites? What about smaller independant social media sites like Gab, who
don't tow the line when it comes to pollitically incorrect speech?
Whilst most people's reaction will be "Thats OK, just use a virtual ISP
to get around it". What do you think the govt are going to restrict next?
I fear we're on a very slippery slope here. Though I'm not surprised the
UK is one of the first places to introduce this. Given our track record,
I'm only suprised they didn't do it sooner.
