Jeff Dahmer goes to high school.
Found this somewhat disappointing. The comic is the story of John
Backderf's high school semi-friendship with Dahmer and Backderf's
attempts to reconcile his memories of the weird kid with the notorious serial-killer he became. Ultimately Backderf is unable to explain what
made the monster and Dahmer remains a cipher.
Which in my opinion makes the movie's decision to shift the
protagonist role to Dahmer himself a mistake.
Oh well, good acting and directing and a nice 70s feel - but read the comic.
and a nonsense of the title.

Definitely well done film but did need to delve darker and deeper -
worth a watch just to see scenes like the young Jeff totally spazzing
out in the shopping mall, however. That kind of detail has been sorely
underaddressed elsewhere.
What's it like 20 years later when you realise you were Jeffrey Dahmer's prom date? (Well she realised that on prom night but you know what I mean.)
Subsequent events have never been adequately addressed. The Jeremy
Renner movie was not bad but somebody needs to give the Dahmer and Gacy stories the full-blown nasty cinematic treatment they deserve.

I went to high school at the same time and 60 miles from Dahmer (and
even nearer to where Gacy did his thing, as I've discussed in detail previously). I must say - the attention to period-appropriate
atmospheric realism displayed in MFD is exceptional for any film and
deeply mesmerizing for someone who survived growing up in that region
and time and similar circumstances. It brought back a ton of
seriously fucked up adolescent memories. A solid 9/10 for me.

Intriguing. I'll line it up for the weekend alongside this little motherfucker I've discovered on Prime:

Which in my opinion makes the movie's decision to shift the protagonist role to Dahmer himself a mistake. Dahmer mopes around being weird but there's no insight into why he is what he is - in fact he's clearly a proto-serial
right in the first scene of the film - while the more interesting story of a normal person's encounter with unimaginable insanity is dropped.
Oh well, good acting and directing and a nice 70s feel - but read the comic.
Still, a half-decent Saturday afternoon FEEL GOOD time-waster.

Yes, perhaps it works better if you view it as a heart-warming coming-of-age story of a plucky young psycho finally shaking off the bullshit social conventions of small-town America and fulfilling his destiny.

It was just so fucking boring - I bet even your formative years were
more exciting than that.
I've gone right off Dahmer now.
Damn, I've spent all my pocket money on BLACKJACKS.
