I've never had enough interest in the bizarre FLAT EARTH theory to bother finding out what it's all about, but then a documentary on the subject
turned up on Netflix. It appears that these likeable and harmless nutters actually believe that we are living in a gigantic soundstage (as in The
Truman Show) - some believe this is encased by a gigantic dome, some don't. Bizarre.
Anyway, what I really wanted to know was their theories about the reason
for this deception - what is the relevance of this being a flat earth and
why should anyone give a fuck? Unfortunately it didn't really go into this
at all but they don't seem to claim any sinister motive or back story -
these strange lost souls just want something for themselves to believe in
that doesn't involve having to do anything other than buy a t-shirt. When
we first meet one of the main flat-earthers, the first thing she says is
how much of a Morrissey fan she is. You can see all the album covers on the wall behind her in her Flat Earth youtube videos! How delightful! I was
won.
The documentary builds up to a simple experiment, involving lasers, that
some of them decide to film to 'prove' their theory once and for all - with amusing and strangely heartening results.
Good luck to the DAFT CUNTS, I say.
