As is customary, my annual round up of fave horror films from the last
    12 months

I'm sure many will disagree with some of my choices, but this is based
purely on how I much personally enjoyed them at the time.

Only seen 2 of the films on your list (MAYHEM and A QUIET PLACE). Enjoyed MAYHEM but thought A QUIET PLACE was mostly shit due to the plot holes
    and inconsistencies.

Are you using different video editing software? It may have been me, but
the film clips seemed to have low video quality.

I'm using different editing software to crop the trailers. They all seem
to be shot in 2.35:1, I always crop them to 1.85:1 so they fill the screen.

I used to use some Sony program (I think) to crop the trailers, but not
to edit the clips as cropping was easy but editing clips was fiddly in that.

For the main videos I always use Corel, but just started using that to
crop trailers too now, as I finally figured out a way of doing it. It
could be I got the output settings wrong. I downloaded the highest
quality videos that were available, but like you say thr cropped
versions did look a bit low-res.

One cut of the dead didn't make the main list as it isn't actually out
yet, I saw a preview screening of it last year. It will probably feature
    in next years vid.

THE MEG?!?! Yes, there is some goofy fun to be had there but it is
hardly one of the best of the year.

NIGHTSHOOTERS looks interesting and I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

the meg was maybe the first film i saw where the 'lets make this in a
way that lots of chinese people will see it' became just too blatant -
even the end theme was in ching chong language.

An increasingly common trend. Pacific Rim:Uprising and Skyscraper were
very much in that vein, although Skyscraper was entertaining in a 'turn
your brain off' kind of way.

I didn't realise that about the theme; I thought they were just throwing cutlery downstairs.
