Sod Frightfest, the MAYHEM Festival in Nottingham is where the REAL
horror is at.
Managed to blag a press pass, so got in for free the other weekend, in
exchange for writing a bunch of reviews.
Highlights of the festival for me were...
Double Date (2017, UK)
A 29 year old virgin thinks he's scored after pulling a couple of girls
on his Birthday, only to find its not his virginity he's liable to lose
with these 2 psychos.
Lots of jokes about ginger haired people, embarrasing parents and
laddish behaviour courtesy of his loud mouthed friend, played by Being
Human's Michael Socha.
Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D (1982, US)
Shown on Friday night, with it being Friday the 13th. We all know the
story for this one so no need for a review. This was a 3D showing, which
we watched with the old red & blue specs.
Obviously they were using the US DVD for this, as the intro titles
weren't in 3D, which they should be. Loved seeing this on the big
screen, the 3D effects kind of worked, though some scenes worked better
than others.
A Day (2017, South Korea)
Groundhog Day meets Final Destination, in which a doctor witnesses his
daughter killed in a traffic accident, only to end up reliving the same
day over and over until he can figure out a way to stop the accident
happening.
Had me gripped to my seat all the way through as the plot takes several
very unexpected twists.
Prey (2016, NL)
A lion stalks the streets of Amsterdam and no-one, and I mean NO ONE, is
safe. As it devours children, the elderly and even the disabled as the
police end up looking like the keystone cops in several botched
operations to capture it.
Directed by Dick Maas (Amsterdamned) I really loved this film and got to
meet the director afterwards who was there to present it. For the most
part the film is in Dutch with English subs, but switches to English for
a good portion of the film when an English game hunter (played by Mark
Frost - Poldark) arrives.
Suspiria (1977, Italy)
This was the new uncut, 4K restoration of Argento's classic horror film,
which is doing the festival rounds at the mo ahead of its impending US
release, in which a girl at a dance school finds the place is run by a
coven of witches and several gruseome deaths ensue.
Pleased to say they screened it with the English dialogue, its certainly
never looked better, although I'm still not sure what to make of Udo
Kiers dubbed American accent.
Top Knott Detective (2017, Au)
Mockumentary about a cult Japanese show which aired once on Australian
TV in the early 90s, never to be seen again following a scandal with its
lead actor.
Its a blatant piss take as there was never any show of that name, but is
so straight laced it had a number of festival goers fooled and was kind
of fun.
Mayhem (2017, US)
Steven Yeun (of Walking Dead fame) takes "Climbing the corporate ladder"
to new heights when his office block is quarantined by the authorities following a virus outbreak that causes people to lose all inhibitions.
As he was in the process of getting fired, he decides to use the
opportunity to teach his bosses on the top floor a lesson, if he can
fight his way up there.
Really liked this one, kind of The Crazies meets The Office.
Dead Shack (2017, US)
A group of kids staying at a remote cabin find the woman who lives
accross the way (played by some woman that used to be in NCIS) has a
family of zombies in her cellar and has been feeding local drunks to them.
Kind of The Goonies meets Braindead, thought this was real funny as the
kids are forced to tool up and take on the zombies and rescue their
drunken Dad (who reminded me of Bod).
There were also a couple of films I didn't like.
Most Beautiful Island (2017, US)
An illegal immigrant takes a job "entertaining" at some party for rich
folk, only to find its no party as she finds herself locked in a
warehouse with several other girls whilst some rich guys play some sort
of "betting" game. But, it's not what you think.
End premise was rather silly and took too long getting there.
The Rift [Rokkur] (2017, Iceland)
Some bloke goes to visit his former boyfriend at some remote cabin in
the Icelandic wilds after receiving a distrught voicemail from him.
Ghostly goings on subsequently ensure, which may have something to do
with an imaginary childhood friend, or a creepy farmer living nearby and something about creepy hitchhikers?
Very slow, very boring and not really into gay dramas if I'm going to be honest.
