HALLOWEEN – Getting beyond Myth and Superstition

For many people Halloween is an amusing, or perhaps even an irritating, time of year when children dress up and play “trick or treat” with friends and neighbors. For Christians it represents All Hallows or All Saints’ eve. For pagans it is the time of Samhain, the Lord of the Underworld.

How else can we look at this most ancient of festivals? Can such an old event have any real meaning or purpose for ordinary people today?

Théun Mares, who has just released his third book, “The Mists of Dragon
    Lore”,
has a fascinating perspective. He says that the significance of this festival is just as important today as it was ages ago. Given the current state of the earth perhaps it is even more vital.

According to the wisdom that Théun describes in his books, all of life revolves around relationships, and our happiness derives from the skill with which we learn to handle these at all levels. Each of the 12 festivals of the year provides a window of opportunity for us to take a closer look at a particular aspect of our relationships.

Halloween itself represents an opportunity to examine our relationship with what we term “nature”.

Scientists are discovering that all of life is capable of exhibiting characteristics of awareness. Therefore our relationship to life - to the earth – to Mother Nature – should be based upon the principles of
    intelligent
co- operation, and not on wanton destruction. If the earth clothes and feeds us why should we continue to rape and plunder her? Where is the respect in this?

Halloween gives us the chance to look at the reality of how we relate to nature in our daily lives, at how we can make improvements, and at how we can in general become more aware of the fact that all of our actions have an impact on our environment.

Why not start off with the pumpkins we use for this festival? We all have a licence to pick and eat, but do we eat or do we waste the innards of our lanterns? How much else do we waste in our lives?

Trick or treat? Where there is waste and destruction there is also a lack of respect in our relationships, and we can expect to get tricked. On the other hand, if we respect and uphold the interrelationship of life, this can only result in treats for all!
