She was born in Benton, Illinois. Wikipedia says she lives "in the Stewart Peninsula section of The Colony, Texas on Lake Lewisville north of Dallas."
I know her mainly for "Slave Girl," aka "Cowslip," which was "translated into French and German."
From "Contemporary Authors":
Beginning her career as an author of historical fiction for middle school readers, Betsy Haynes has gone on to create several series of popular books for
young teens. The "Fabulous Five" series revolves around a group of middle school-aged girls, vividly
portraying their sometimes misguided efforts to fit in, their budding interest in boys, and their consuming jealousy with a popular classmate named Taffy Sinclair. Other Haynes' series, including "Boy Talk," "Taffy Sinclair," and "Bone Chillers," also
feature the array of concerns most common to Haynes's young teen readers: clothes, boys, popularity, boys, being accepted by the "in" group, and, of course, boys...
...In addition to her series novels focusing on the everyday social lives of modern teens, Haynes has also written several historical and mystery novels, and has published short fiction in several periodicals. "As a writer of historical fiction for young
people in these days of rapid advance and transition, I believe that it is important to help children see themselves as a part of the whole historical perspective, not just the future but the past as well," she once commented. In her first novel, 1973's
Cowslip, Haynes portrays the horrors of slavery through her thirteen-year-old protagonist who works for the owner of a cotton plantation in the pre-Civil War
South. Sold to her current owner at an auction, Cowslip experiences the humiliations of slavery
first-hand, yearns for freedom, and finds solace and support through her new close- knit African-American plantation community.
Set during the American Revolution, Spies on the Devil's Belt finds fourteen-year-old Jonathan Barlowe freshly recruited into a Continental Army regiment assigned to raid a Tory outpost across Long Island Sound--the "Devil's
Belt" of the title. Sent on
what he considers to be routine errands--delivering bread to his regiment from a local tavern-- because of his youth, Jonathan slowly begins to realize that his friend is a spy for the British...
