Only just found out this was released earlier in the year. It's quite a
while since I last watched the film and I'm very impressed with the picture quality of this dvd - the only problem is that the stock footage stands out more. But that doesn't matter really, it's still as terrifyingly believable
as it ever was. Even though it's so old, and the threat of nuclear war
doesn't apply so much, this is still the most horrifying movie experience
there is. The only one with the ability to leave me in a state of numbed
shock every single time. It's amazing that they could make a nuclear
apocalpyse look and feel so real with such a small budget.

The extras are OK - a few very short documentaries and 2 commentaries. I've listened to the one by the director/producer which was interesting enough
but, as I usually find with these things, didn't tell me the things I
    really wanted to know.

There was also a dvd/blu-ray release of When the Wind Blows this year which
I think I'm going to have to fork out for now. That one has some very attractive looking extras, especially the 50 minute PROTECT AND SURVIVE
    public information film.

funny thing is the bit that always stands out to me is the awful
breaking windows sound effect that sounds like it's from one of those
    bbc sound effect albums.
    that and granny pooing herself.

Random Sheffield shopper pissing themselves is the main bit of the attack
    scene that I remember.

THREADS stands up well in terms of gritty realism but, yes, has dated somewhat.

I saw it when it was first aired in Oz in the '80s (about the same time as the BBC screened it, give or take a wek or so). Scared the fucking pants off me. Looking at it again with adult eyes, it's still frightening and bleak but I was more taken by some of the details (e.g. the EMP attack over the North Sea)
that young me didn't really understand. A great film and incredibly impactful for something made for TV in the '80s.

WHEN THE WIND BLOWS is just heartbreaking, really. It's not a perfect film and suffers from some pacing issues but the story is grimly compelling in a way that's belied by Raymond Briggs's soft, inviting art.

I was struck by how much it reminded me of Dawn of the Dead in parts. I
was hoping the director might say something about being influenced by
it, but nothing was mentioned, so it's probably in my head.

if i'd been older in the 80s i'd probably have been worried but as
someone born in 73 i can honestly say we were oblivious.

I'm only a couple of years older. Going to a Quaker school that had a big
chip on its collective shoulder about the threat of nuclear war kind of raised my awareness a bunch. THREADS definitely managed to do things much more impactfully than its bigger budgeted contemporary, THE DAY AFTER, whose attack sequence looks plain cheesy next to the former's bargain basement effort.

Really? I'm about the same age and remember there being a feeling that it
was only a matter of time before World War 3 kicked off. There seemed to be
a lot of talk about nuclear war at school and on tv - CND were always on
the news. At school, we learned a lot more than we ever needed to know
about Hiroshima and were forever watching images of milk bottles melting
and what have you. It was the idea of nuclear winter that caught my
imagination - I've always been more terrified of the aftermath rather than
the event. Which is what makes Threads as powerful as it is.
