I can't remember whether I read about these films here or heard about them on Mr
Arsewell's podcast but I definitely took a note of them at the time and gave them a go.

BETTER WATCH OUT (a.k.a. SAFE NEIGHBOURHOOD)
I thought that this was going to be some kind of holiday slasher but it turns out that it's a fairly lightweight, goofy, "psychological" horror film about a pre-teen (or early teens) kid who has an unhealthy fixation on his babysitter. There's a surprising amount of the red stuff sprayed around the place by the end
of the film and it's reasonably entertaining, if a little predictable. A fairly
    heavily qualified recommendation for me.

    WAKE WOOD
Another retelling of The Monkey's Paw (by way of Pet Semetary). After the death
of their daughter, a distraught couple move to a rural Irish town where the locals practice pagan rituals. The wife is unable to have further children so the couple make use of the aforementioned rituals to bring their daughter back to life (for three days only, we're told, and provided that she's not been dead for more than a year). Things go awry, naturellement, and we're treated to the antics of a resurrected child with bad intentions on her mind. It's pretty gruesome and some of the resurrection effects are entertainingly gloopy but there's not much original going on here. It plays like PET SEMETARY with POTATO
PAKIS. It's good looking, though, and never boring so it's probably worth a red
    hot go.

    THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER
I was expecting Catholic boarding schools in peril to be far more exploitative than this slow burn of a short film stretched out to feature length. Told using
a non-linear chronology, this tale concerns a pair of girls at a boarding school
whose parents have failed to collect them for the holidays. One of them suspects that she may be pregnant to her boyfriend and the other seems a little unhinged and becomes more so as the plot unfolds. There is probably enough actual material here for a 40 minute short and the profusion of static shots of the abandoned school is only some of the evidence of this to be seen throughout this incredibly elongated production. It is certainly filmed well, though, and the performances are surprisingly restrained. Despite the gory denouement and implications of the supernatural, I don't even know that this could even be considered a horror film. I don't begrudge it my time but I can't express a massive amount of enthusiasm for it, in spite of its good patches.

I somehow made it to the end of Better Watch Out, but, wow, was that a
chore. Horribly annoying from start to finish. Would be improved by a
bomb dropping on everyone in the film about 5 minutes in. Could make a
nice crossover with Threads that way. Except I'd be rooting for the
    radiation sickness.

I tried out Blackcoat's Daughter when it first hit video and bailed early.
I should take another crack at it, since I can't remember what turned me
    off of it.
