The novel came recommended on a website dedicated to the Goth subculture. I believe the author has written a subsequent novel with a similar theme.

They sound similar in some respects to Nick Sagan's 'Idlewild'.

It just reminded me how good The Matrix was. I really didn't
understand why or how these kids got to be so obsessed with the 80s.
Was that from the book or just a cheap marketing trick?

I haven't yet read the novel but from what I understand of it, the competition to inherit the system requires knowledge of 1980s popular culture. It sounds as though it wasn't dealt with very well in the
    film.

I didn't *hate* this movie, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in a

I found A GHOST STORY to be tedious drivel.

There are a number of decent films on Netflix - If they are still on

It is a peculiarity of the genre that they prefer beam weaponry for offence and forcefields for defence. The best plot device for their downfall was susceptibility to Earth's bacteria.

I found A GHOST STORY to be tedious drivel.

I'm expecting the same to be honest but am sick of people recommending it.

There are a number of decent films on Netflix - If they are still on
there, I would recommend the two Isaac Esban films, THE SIMILARS and THE INCIDENT (the reason I subscribed to Netflix in the first place).

I'm sure I started watching The Similars once? I really like the sound of
The Incident though. Good Time is worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

I watched another one of these last night (Netflix's EXTINCTION)
which tries (and fails) to be a thinking person's version of the
alien invasion film. Even has Michael Peña playing the same role as
    in BLA.

Another thing aliens have never invented is bombs.

It is a peculiarity of the genre that they prefer beam weaponry for
offence and forcefields for defence. The best plot device for their
downfall was susceptibility to Earth's bacteria.

I've only just noticed Netflix's recommendation action is technically
correct. "Because you watched BATTLE LA you might watch this". No
    mention of liking anything.

My tastes can seldom be predicted by algorithms, which is odd because
I tend to have specific tastes that have been likened unto a set of fixations.

You've got to love this fucking ODDBALL.

God, The Incident was fucking brilliant! Thank you for that one. I'm
going to watc it again later.

TWL probably just hangs out with a lot of hipsters. But fuck me, that is an annoying film.

I also will be looking out for THE INCIDENT.

Every week Starship Enterprise/Voyager/Whatever encounters a new race of aliens, some thousands of years advanced in technology, some thousands of
years behind, but then when the space battle starts it's always a closely fought thing. What's that about?

Surely you mean "susceptibility to glasses of water"?

The only people I actively choose to 'hang out' with are you fuckers. Most other people are just inflicted on me.
