It's got to be better than Ready Player One. That is absolutely the LAST
time anybody else gets a chance to pick, no matter how much of MY shit they've had to endure.

The novel came recommended on a website dedicated to the Goth
subculture. I believe the author has written a subsequent novel
with a similar theme.
They sound similar in some respects to Nick Sagan's 'Idlewild'.
It just reminded me how good The Matrix was. I really didn't
understand why or how these kids got to be so obsessed with the 80s.
Was that from the book or just a cheap marketing trick?
I haven't yet read the novel but from what I understand of it, the competition to inherit the system requires knowledge of 1980s popular culture. It sounds as though it wasn't dealt with very well in the
film.

the 80 was the best decade so there! - 7 in 1980 and lived through all
the fun before adulthood came in the 90s.

I've only just noticed Netflix's recommendation action is technically correct. "Because you watched BATTLE LA you might watch this". No
mention of liking anything.

The inventor of the game and the system was obsessed with all things
80s and incorporated them into his game and the puzzles therein.
Because he made it part of his VR platform, presumably most people who
used the system were by default immersed in 80s nostalgia.
I didn't *hate* this movie, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in a
theater. It's a children's movie, and not a very good one. Simple, predictable, and at least half an hour too long.

It's given me a few good ones this week actually. LOVING VINCENT and A
GHOST STORY, both of which I've been wanting to see but not enough to
pay for or go to the trouble of nigelling. CHRISTINE and TAXI DRIVER - neither of which I ever get bored of watching.

I watched another one of these last night (Netflix's EXTINCTION) which tries (and fails) to be a thinking person's version of the alien invasion film.
has Michael Peña playing the same role as in BLA.

I found A GHOST STORY to be tedious drivel.
There are a number of decent films on Netflix - If they are still on
there, I would recommend the two Isaac Esban films, THE SIMILARS and THE INCIDENT (the reason I subscribed to Netflix in the first place).

It is a peculiarity of the genre that they prefer beam weaponry for
offence and forcefields for defence. The best plot device for their
downfall was susceptibility to Earth's bacteria.

My tastes can seldom be predicted by algorithms, which is odd because
I tend to have specific tastes that have been likened unto a set of fixations.
