• Mark Kermode's Secrets of Cinema

I just about managed to endure the first episode about cunting ROM-COMS.
What kind of a sick twisted bastard gets off on this shit? The clips of
HUGH GRANT and people KISSING left me traumatised and gasping for some good decent RAPE.

I had higher hopes for the second one, HEIST MOVIES, but it was full of
almost entirely predictable clips and references. Kermode needs to stop
banging on about the same old bollocks. The only point of interest was the
news (to me) about the Wachowski 'brothers'. What times we live in!

Next week is COMING OF AGE DRAMAS. Who knew there were so many detestable genres?

I felt obliged to watch the one on horror films and was rewarded with a
glimpse of KRUG! I was overjoyed to also see the funniest scene from the
highly underrated Cockneys V Zombies included.

I watched it as well and was disappointed. Maybe it's that the subject of horror films is too big to cover in just an hour, or maybe the overall
theme of the series was aimed at tropes rather than anything deeper.

He also seemed to be overselling some of the movies - He mentioned
something about ONIBABA being terrifying, which it wasn't.

Never seen it. If that was the funniest scene, then I'm not sure
"underrated" would be the best way to describe it.

I haven't seen the original THE HAUNTING but I'm definitely on board with TWL about THE EXORCIST. Just too talky for mine and the "shocking" scenes are mostly grossouts with a touch of Bogus Catholic Theology sprinkled over the top.

It doesn't help that it was the only film I wasn't allowed to watch as a

Remake or one of the J-Horror originals?

I've only seen the remake and, yes, it worked surprisingly well given the fairly
wholesome package that it had to represent. When I saw it in the theatre, I was
hard pressed not to yell "get the FUCK out of DODGE" at the screen in the

I watched it in 2016 as part of a triple feature with SADAKO 3D & SADAKO
2 3D. This was my review from the time:

"Two girls stumble across a cursed video tape when they buy an old VHS
player. When they watch it, they race to find someone who can help them
before the curse strikes. Meanwhile, another girl moves into a new neighbourhood right next door to a haunted house. This is the Japanese equivalent of "Freddy vs Jason" as Sadako (Ringu) goes up against Kayako (Ju-On). It's not completely terrible, but it is sad how Western
influence and financial interest have created (and destroyed) franchises
based on such great original films."

Yeah there fuckin is. THE RING is an abortion, look at 'the video' for example... the original is raw and fantastic, the american version has
cgi centipedes and spinning ladders and looks more like someone tuned in
to 1997 MTV. Also why that fuckin horse on a boat scene? Also the kid
who played the son has the most punchable face this side of a Smiths

I know it's Korean, but has anybody watched The Wailing? I keep
looking at it but the epic running time puts me off.

I watched it in 2016 and this was my review from the time:

"A police officer in a small town investigates a series of murders.
Each murder seemed to be committed by someone who had fallen ill with
a mystery disease shortly before the killings. The locals suspect that
the events are linked to a mysterious Japanese man who lives in a
shack in the woods. When the police officer's daughter falls ill, he
is determined to find out what is going on. With a runtime of two and
a half hours, this Korean film is too long and whilst its odd mix of
themes and baffling plot keep you watching, you don't really get any answers."

This doesn't really help me come to a decision.

Yeah there fuckin is. THE RING is an abortion, look at 'the video' for example... the original is raw and fantastic, the american version has
cgi centipedes and spinning ladders and looks more like someone tuned
in to 1997 MTV. Also why that fuckin horse on a boat scene? Also the
kid who played the son has the most punchable face this side of a
Smiths tribute band. Still blows my mind that people regard this as the 'good' j-horror remake, it's toilet.

THE RING is better than RINGU.

    There, I said it.

Which one would be "the good one" then, do you reckon? I can barely remember any of them, but do recall the US DARK WATER wasn't even horror.

One, for fewer than three seconds. You still got a hard-on about that, huh?

And I'm somewhere in the middle. I'll stand by the idea that there are worse ways to spend 90-odd minutes but there's nary a frisson in the whole movie. On the other hand, I'd be hard-pressed to say that it was boring.
