    Probably not much difference nowadays, but in the days when Usenet was
    more used than it is now, soc.history would have been more for serious
    academic history and alt.history more for pop history, but nowadays
    people will be more inclined to cross post to both, and probably a few
    others too, in the hope that someone, anyone, out there might read it
    and respond.
