The Sanskrit word bhaavanaa was used by ancient Indian
algebraists to name a principle of "composition" introduced
by Brahmagupta (born in 598 ce) way back in the seventh
century.
In mathematics, a law of composition combines (i.e.,
"composes") two mathematical objects of a certain type to
produce a third object of the same type; for instance, it
may combine two solutions of a given equation to generate a
third solution of the equation, or it may combine two
polynomial expressions of a particular form to yield
another expression of the same form.
Brahmagupta is the first known mathematician to state (in
628) a non-trivial principle of composition. . . .
