Being A Hindu In Bharat [Letter to The Hindu in the 1940s]

I am a Hindu and have been a Hindu since birth. As I call
myself a Hindu, the Indian government will look on me as
a communalist. A Hindu in India is expected to be ashamed
of his religion and not talk about it in public. He must
proclaim that he is secular. He must be tolerant when
Hindus are attacked and Hinduism is ridiculed. Hindus
believe that all religions lead to the same truth. Some
other religions proclaim their uniqueness and feel that
their can only be salvation through their religion. They
want us to embrace their religion out of the concern of
pagan Hindus. Hindus Accept the right to convert others.
Some ridicule hindu gods and goddesses at street-corner
meetings and Hindus do not protest. Hindus accept the
others' right to propagate their faith by fair or foul
    means.

Governments manage Hindu temples. they do no interfere in
the administration of the religious places of other
religions as they belong to minority religious groups.
Government enact laws governing the life of Hindus but
minority groups are given freedom to do what they want to.

Sri Rama's birthday and Sri Krishna's birthday are not
national holidays. The prophet's birthday is a national
holiday. They Hindus do not mind as they are tolerant
people. they recite “Ishwer Allah Tera Naam" and no one
    does.

Ambedkar ridiculed and abused Hindus and Hinduism. As
tolerant Hindus, we love him, we adore him. Alladi
Krishnaswami Iyer, B. N. Rao, and other also contributed
a great deal towards drafting of the Indian Constitution.
We have forgotten them as they were foolish enough not to
    criticize Hindus and Hinduism.

Hindus adore Max Muller for his translation of Hindu
religious work into English. Some call him a Rishi. We
forgive him for his views on Hindus and Hinduism. He
translated Hindu religious works to prove that
Christianity is superior to Hinduism. In 1886 Max Muller
wrote a letter to his wife

"I hope I shall finish the work, and I feel convinced
though I shall not live to see it, yet this edition of
mine and translation of Veda will hereafter tell to great
extent on the fate of India and on the growth of millions
of souls in that country. It is the root of their
religion and to show them what the root is, I feel sure,
is the only way of uprooting all that sprung from it
during the last three thousand years".

He wrote to the Secretary of State for India that “The
ancient religion of India is doomed and if Christianity
does not step in, whose fault will it be?" As true Hindu,
we forget his motives and value him for his work.

I am distressed at the way Hindus are treated by every
government. Our governments are more interested in
minority than in the majority community*. Hindus are
taken for granted. Their tolerance is mistaken for
    weakness.

In the name of secularism, governments trample on the
feelings of Hindus. The present tensions in the country
are due to the one-sided policy of the governments.
Governments are united in dividing people on the basis of
their religion. The British divided and ruled. They have
    left us; Their legacy remains.
