Many historians and scientists argue that the worst year to
be alive was 536 AD due to a series of devastating events
that plunged much of the world into chaos.
A massive volcanic eruption, or possibly a series of eruptions,
shrouded the Northern Hemisphere in a veil of ash and dust.
This blocked sunlight for an estimated 18 months, causing a
dramatic drop in global temperatures. This phenomenon is
known as the volcanic winter of 536.
. . .
The weakened populations then succumbed to various
plagues and infections.
Big volcanoes, likely well out in the Pacific,
horribly polluted the air and cut off the sun
for at least 18 months. Barely anything would
grow and mass-starvation set in. No giant cargo
ships full of flour back then ...
Note this is right about the timeframe where the
Roman Empire finally imploded. There were many
other factors there (no, they didn't die of orgies),
but mass-starvation across much of the occupied lands
sure as hell would have been a major contributor.
Hmmmm ... by looking for the ash layer, they OUGHT
to be able to pin-down exactly which volcano
were involved. If they did it once, well, something
to keep an eye on !
Oh, new eruptions, there'd be NO fix for it, all
the crops would die AGAIN. We can't beat Nature
at THAT kind of scale.
