yeh, I used to be mildly pacifist, now I'm an extremist :-)

back in the day we could even attach small files to usenet
postings, there was no abuse. I'm trying to get commercial

Never done binary groups as such, what I meant was
regular usenet where we could attach small files (unless
I'm confusing early usenet with even earlier Compuserve).

My ISP dumped usenet years ago too, so after pissing
around with a few free servers for a while I went to
giganews for a minimal account around 3$/m

Yeah - usenet binary groups allow "medium" sized files...shareware,
graphics, audio/midi files for use in collaboration...etc. "Warez"
files. I used to get zinged for posting files until I learned of the
proper usenet groups to post them in - binary groups.

I got gigs of 3D files I scraped from usenet binary shares...my initial thinking was that I was going to start doing sound for film using my
home recording gear, and that it was easier - and cheaper - to do
animation and then score that rather than hiring actors. But doing
animation turns out to be a serious job all it's own, so I never really
got around to doing more than collecting freeware. But the group was
full of cool, creative, talented people and I did learn some things.

I actually have a newsreader on my iPad...I just don't have any solid
    usenet access anymore.
