Omicron More Transmissible, Less Severe than Delta
New lab study results on the omicron variant of COVID-19 explain why it
is more transmissible than the delta variant that is currently the
dominant strain. Not only do omicron’s mutations help it evade vaccine defenses, but it replicates itself in respiratory cells 70 times faster
than delta does in the first 24 hours of infection. Omicron also
deposits itself in the upper airways, making it easier to transmit
through simple breathing, which generates tiny aerosol bubbles that can
linger in the air.
Only N95 masks can protect against these (more on that below). While
data from actual infections will be needed to corroborate these lab
results, it confirms why omicron is likely to replace delta, and why
another infection surge is likely coming to the U.S. That said, evidence
so far suggests that the severity of the illness is less, and especially
so for those who have been vaccinated.
