Well give Lori Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, this much,
they do have good timing. Pleading guilty this week to one count of fraud
may put an end to this sad chapter for them at a time when much of the
public is more focused on COVID-19 than celebrities involved with the
notorious college admissions scandal.
But before the book is closed on the actress Loughlins role in this (and
the role of her designer husband), its worth reviewing exactly why anyone should have cared about this from the beginning.
As the deal reads currently, Loughlin will serve two months in federal
prison, while Giannulli will serve five months. They also will receive
fines of $150,000 and $250,000, respectively, community service, and two
years of supervised release. This is all subject to approval by the judge.
While the news is turned toward everything coronavirus-related, the public might not be as attuned to Loughlin and Giannullis decision to plead
guilty. Also, nonviolent criminals, such as Trumps former lawyer Michael
Cohen and Trumps former campaign manager Paul Manafort, are being
released from federal prisons to serve their sentences at home. So who
knows how long this couple will actually spend behind bars in the end.
What does seem clear is that if the couple had pleaded guilty last year,
they might have secured shorter sentences and smaller fines. Last May,
actress Felicity Huffman confessed to one count of conspiracy to commit
mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. She admitted spending $15,000
to cheat on the SAT to get her daughter a better score and received a two-
week stint in the federal pen.
Loughlin and Giannullis charges are worse than Huffmans, of course. They spent $500,000 in hopes of helping two daughters get into the University
of Southern California, but typically defendants can secure shorter
sentences if they plead out quickly. Loughlin and Giannullis delay may
have cost them more time in confinement.
Other than the normal rubbernecking involved in watching high-profile
people crash their seemingly successful lives, there is a reason why all
of us should care about this scandal and how it plays out. The two
celebrities were steadfast in denying their charges until much of the
world moved on to deal with COVID-19. But in the end this scandal struck a central pillar of our society. In a free society, people who work hard to develop their talents should be rewarded for their achievements. One of
the paths to such success is supposed to be earning your admission to a college. To the extent that we strip merit away from college admissions,
we are undermining a merit-based society. So in this the colleges
themselves should be outraged and society at large should be thankful that
the authorities drove us toward a just outcome that exposes cheating and creates an incentive for each person to rise on their merits.
