Former United Auto Workers President Gary Jones was charged on Thursday
with embezzling more than $1 million as part of a US corruption probe that
has raised the specter of the federal government taking over the labor
union.

Jones, who spearheaded the UAW’s contract negotiations late last year with Detroit auto giants as well as a 40-day strike at General Motors, is
accused of being part of a group of UAW bigwigs who embezzled more than $1 million to pay for private villas, liquor, golf and other luxuries,
according to documents filed with a Michigan federal court and made public Thursday.

The charging of Jones, 63, and other senior UAW leaders has shaken the
union and led GM to file a racketeering lawsuit against its smaller rival
Fiat Chrysler.

Federal authorities raided Jones’ suburban Detroit home on Aug. 28, 2019.
A neighbor reported seeing FBI and IRS agents removing boxes from the red
brick mansion and looking through cash from his garage, CNBC reported at
the time.

The home of former UAW President Dennis Williams was also searched.

Jones resigned his post and UAW membership in November after the union
removed him from office, as US prosecutors widened a criminal
investigation into illegal payoffs.

Jones was charged in an information, a court document typically used when
the government has reached a plea deal with a defendant.

J. Bruce Maffeo, a lawyer for Jones, did not respond to a request for
comment.

The documents were unsealed on Thursday, but previously filed.

A spokesman for the UAW could not be reached to comment.

The charges against Jones come just days after another UAW official,
former Region 5 community action president Edward “Nick” Robinson, pleaded guilty to embezzlement and conspiracy to defraud the government.

Robinson, a 72-year-old resident of Kirkwood, Mo., also conceded that he
helped himself to $34,000 that he failed to report to the IRS.

He told a court that the ill-gotten gains were spent on such items as
cigars and other personal indulgences, the Detroit News reported.

A close aide to Jones at one time, Robinson greeted federal prosecutors
warmly, making onlookers wonder how closely he cooperated with them in the probe, the Detroit News reported.
