Hello to the three or so people who still frequent this group.

Sadly I wasn't around yet when the usenet was something people used, so
I didn't get to experience it or this specific newsgroup for myself.
After browsing old drug related websites (especially the one from
William E White) I got curious.

I would like to know what this group was used for specifically. For trip reports? Harm reduction tips? Science? What was the general culture
like? Who posted in here? Students, researchers etc?

Also where did all the people go? Did they migrate to a specific web forum?

I would really appreciate any response, I know these are a lot of
questions. I hope I don't come of as intruding.

    Thank You!

All of the above, yes. The culture was fairly tight-knit, many of us
meeting outside of Usenet and in person.

I don't know about people from the group going to a specific place,
but Reddit has generally provided a comparable forum framework to
    Usenet.

If it weren't for the stimulus payments due to the pandemic, I'd still
be using Linux on my old computer. The Windows 10 (and now 11)
    behemoth outgrew that hardware.

As Joel says we had all of the above and more. I think that
most of the users of adp had done everything they could in drugs and
they began to develop other ways of occupying their time. I had
been dealing with my own peculiar problems while I supported all
the people who were oppressed more than myself.

I myself, once true psychedelic substances became more
difficult to access, got into computer use. When I hit 65 I got
into Japanese comics (manga) and animation (anime).
I had always been more into comics than the average person
on the street. I had plenty of 65 will be about 20 years ago.

I got into GNU/Linux for my computers at nearly the
same time. At the same time I was getting sick with SEID
and had less energy to do political marches and demos so
I started posting the Drug War Chronicle here to try
to get people out of their drug closets and working to
get legalized cannabis one way and another.

The last protest I attended was about 20 years
ago when I happened to be walking past the Federal Building
and I joined the marchers in a circle.

    Thank you for your answer!

I find it really fascinating to hear about people meeting in person,
it's different from now I feel like. I spend much time on reddit too and
while I like the community I can't exactly imagine meeting up with all
of these people ^^. In person interaction is loosing it's importance I
    guess.

    Big snip.

Thank your for your long answer!

It's really interesting to hear about this stuff for me, because not
many people are remembering or talking about Usenet and drugs (or Usenet
in general). I think it's very cool you were politically active, and
still are :D. The years in the old millennium seem so mystical
sometimes. Being political is something most people only do in the
internet today, and I'm not too sure if that's only positive. I'm sorry
to hear about you getting with SEID though.

I personally am into manga, anime and Linux too! I would have never
guessed that old people (sorry hehe) do like manga ^^.

If I was not old I would not be alive to answer your post.

Liking computer and drugs seems to connected for most people, but the
only people I really know who are into drugs are people from the
internet, so my sample size is probably screwed :3.

You are correct that your sample is skewed.

Drugs may have inspired some early home computer engineers. Like the other Steve at Apple Mr.Wozniak. He was the original hardware
guy, for Apple, He took some of his wealth back in the day and had
a giant Rock and Roll festival. Some of the coders were inspired with
lots of different sorts of kaleidoscope programs and Tim Leary that
foolish fellow who was a doctor of various disciplines wrote a program
to run on the Commodore 64 with no graphical features that would ask
a series of question and decide what personality type you were.

By and large people like drugs even if they refuse to
admit to liking drugs. People drink gallons of coffee to get
the effect of caffeine. Also coca drinks for the same reasons
And booze of which I used to use a lot every year up until I
was about 30 and my doctor told me I had better things to do
with my liver. So I stopped drinking about 50 years back.
A week or so back at the corner store I got a Mexican coke.
the next day I had a caffeine withdrawal headache. Later
with friends I had a rum and coke at a haunt in the Castro.
I think the Mexican coke would have been better with the
rum and ice. The drink was worse than I remembered.
The people in the Castro like drugs but sometimes
they don't like to admit what they are using is a drug.
Think of poppers which dilate blood vessels and
are used to heighten sexual experiences. The Castro is
papered with anti-meth posters as too many people
use it and do not realize that their judgement is impaired
and forget to use prophylactics in their carnal relations
I use a fair amount of oral medical grade cannabis
products for pain and sleep. I am extremely sensitive to
    aspirin and its relatives.

I stopped using "acid" after about 40 yoa because
it was too expensive. The last time I used mescaline or
psylocibin (sic) was a bit later and it told me how sick
I had gotten and how out of kilter my body was. And it
was right. If I was sick now with Covid-19 they would call
it "Long haul covid" but then we called it "chronic fatigue
syndrome" or "Myalgic Encephalitis" and what both are is
    "Post Viral infection, diseases" problems.

I had to put away my former life because I could no
longer work for a living. Otherwise I would not be typing
here but riding my motorcycle out there.

But the favorite Drugs are most like the one
called "Love" made in your own body, and of course
Religion about which Marx was right, it does serve as
the Opiate of the people while the Elite practice
the use of drugs as their religion since they can
    afford it.
Nearly all drugs have side effects that when
you learn about them you find you have less reason
to use them. My favorite indulgences are manga and
Chocolate, dark 72% cocoa solids. So far only a few
products labeled chocolate have enough caffeine to
bother me. Generally they are coverings for coffee
beans of one sort or another.

Well I have medications to take and maybe
    a show to watch.
